Welcome to brachman.org, the personal site of Ron Brachman.
I am the Chief Scientist of Yahoo! and the Head of Yahoo! Labs. Yahoo! Labs is a worldwide research and applied science organization, with an exceptional team of scientists and research engineers. It also includes the company's Academic Relations organization. We have Yahoo! Labs teams in Sunnyvale, California; New York City; Barcelona, Spain; Haifa, Israel; Bangalore, India; Beijing, China; and Santiago, Chile.
Prior to joining Yahoo! in 2005, I was the Director of the Information Processing Technology Office (IPTO) at DARPA, the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency. In that capacity I led a new revitalized (and re-named) IPTO and DARPA towards a new generation of computational systems with cognitive capabilities, building on artificial intelligence and systems work from many parts of Computer Science. The Personalized Assistant that Learns (PAL) program that I created with help from Zach Lemnios led directly to the technology that Apple now offers in the form of the Siri intelligent assistant on the iPhone 4s.
In February of 2002, I retired from AT&T Labs, after more than 16 years with AT&T Labs and Bell Labs.
